Additions to the menagerie

Meet the girls (and one boy). There are 6 of them altogether, 5 hens and 1 cockerel. We didn't really want a cockerel at first as we don't have any plans to let them breed, but he came with the girls, and now he's here I'm glad we got him because he is a fine fellow, and very protective of his little harem.

They needed a little encouragement to brave the outside world this morning, but once they were rudely shoved out of the house have spent a lovely day scratching around in their run on what is going to become our asparagus bed.

    1. Ahhhh never read that in any of the beginner books! He's technically from the same brood, and we really don't want any more than this for now so his role will be mainly decorative.

  2. Ohhhh they're lovely! Ours laid just as well with and without a rooster, but he kept them together and let us know if there was any threat to them about, plus I thought it was more fun to watch them with a rooster in their midst. What sort of chickens are those, are they any particular breed or just pretty birds?

    1. They're Pekin Bantams, very sweet, and nice and easy to handle.

  3. It might be a bit difficult to tell him about his only decorative duties! But as long as the girls lay where you can find the eggs you won't have a problem. :)
    Lovely looking chickens.
