Pembroke
My Dad describes this part of the UK as God's country, and this week, I think he might have been right. The sun shone, I actually wore shorts and exposed my pasty white legs to the world for the first time this year. We did lots of climbing, lots of relaxing and generally forgot about the world for a whole week. Bliss.

Pembrokeshire
I had a lovely week, the wind blew a little too strongly, but apart from that we only had one day of rain.
Oh, it also rained as we took the tent down, it's now sat in the back of my car waiting for a dry day (possibly tomorrow) waiting for me to pull it out and dry it.
We didn't get any canoeing done, but did climb nearly every day. We also did a couple of morning's body boarding which caused great amusement trying to squeeze me in to the same wet suit I've had since I was 15, now while I haven't grown vertically since then, nor indeed much in any direction the wet suit is now snugger than it once was!
Now I have a week and a half until school starts, I'd better do some actual work! (oh and get knitting, I have 2 projects I need finished for a wedding the weekend before we go back!)

Finished
School is all over, all in all I'd class it as not a bad way to spend my last week at work. In fact most of the time I couldn't quite believe I was being paid to do this!
The rain mostly stayed away (as much as can be expected for Scotland), though unfortunately the midges didn't. I kept waking up last night scratching, I've never reacted well to midge bites and have a complete circle of bites around my waist...

Here's a quick selection of the photos, the full set is here They're a bit of a mixture, some were taken while waiting to be picked up after checking on a group, others are Yarn Harlot style sock photos, a couple are of the wheel changing on the minibus, and some are up on Ben Nevis. After all the kids finish their expedition we have a day of activities for them. Some of the kids headed up Ben Nevis, and I managed to sneak off and get some climbing done on the North Face of Ben Nevis. We didn't get an entire route done as we had to get down and pick some kids up in the minibus, but just being up there climbing was amazing. The amount of snow left was surprising, the big lump you can see in the photo had an arch underneath it that I could have gone and stood under, evidence of just how much snow fell this year.
For now I intend to sit back, and enjoy the holidays, I've pretty much unpacked, though the place is still a bit of a bombsite... it's my head of departments hen do this afternoon, and I need to go shopping first. It might be time to part company with my bed and get the day started!

Payment
Remember the awesome time I had this weekend?
Well on one climb I really banged my knee, loud enough that my Mum standing 3 metres away heard it! This would be the result, ouch!

Summer feels like it's here
I spent sunday climbing with my family and it was a wonderful end to the holidays. I've gone back to work today feeling ready to carry on and looking forward to the day. The sun shone all day and has left me with my first sun burn of the year (not to self, time for the sun cream to back in the rucsac!). I think I climbed as well as I've done in a very long time and just generally relaxed and enjoyed the sunshine. It was one of those days where the photos don't really do it justice, and quite rightly Mum kept her hands on the ropes and didn't take pictures while I was doing my hardest lead (Technical Slab at The Roaches HS 4b if you know your climbing).
However here you go-

This is not me or any of my family, just an impressive looking climb (The Sloth HVS) an one of the most famous in this country. The route I did goes to the right up the blanker looking slab bit...

(Yes this is me!)
There would have been more of this one but Mum managed to take video instead mostly featuring trees....

Saturday
This is what happened on Saturday.

I was meant to be climbing, erm that kind of happened, but not enough to justify the hour drive in a minibus. In the end we called time at 2.30pm, 4 hours after we got there and 2 hours after the first snow shower. Sunday of course was bright blue skies and blazing sunshine. Combined with my broken car, mice in the house general nastiness at school, and my flat for next year falling through I'm ready to say goodbye to March. Maybe April will be better, after all 2 weeks of it are holiday time, everything seems better when you're on holiday!

More climbing photos
Some photos from last weekend so I thought I'd share them with you. enjoy playing spot the Katie in the second one!
Also a while ago I mentioned that someone broke their leg on a weekend trip away. she put her X-ray photos on Facebook and they're pretty amazing, though not for the faint hearted!
I would show the one with the pin in it but it has her name in very large letters so I don't think she'd appreciate it!

Fireworks
The reason for the posting silence was yet another weekend away with the uni club. Yes I know I've graduated, but all my friends are still students, and besides it's a good laugh.
There were games

and fireworks

and even some walking (sorry no photos, as usual I took my camera and it never left my rucsac, I'm waiting for someone to upload some on to Facebook!)
There was also some drinking, minibus driving, and a broken leg. However we don't want to go in to details about that, it all worked out ok, and it's a risk we accept when we go climbing.

Grey
The weather is very grey at the moment, if you look over at the side bar you will see I'm knitting something in colours to counteract this, definitely yarn to look at when you have a hangover! Also to counteract this are some photos from a couple of weeks ago when I was climbing in Wales, I've almost forgotten that the sky could be blue(ish!)

On another note, I was awoken at 11.30 last night by a slightly frantic housemate who had noticed water pouring through our living room ceiling. Turns out one of our taps had sprung a leak! After some attempts at a DIY fix we started playing hunt the stopcock to turn off the water. By this point water was starting short the light so we had to switch the fuse for the lights off. All the while we're trying to ring the landlord to find out what to do, with no response. She eventually rang us at 7.30 the next morning, and true to her word did indeed come round with someone and sort out the leak. Unfortunately the ceiling looks a little worse for wear... though it could have been worse, some night's the first we'd have known about it would have been the crash as the ceiling fell through!

The perfect weekend
or as near as you can get anyway. My Mum asked me on the phone earlier why my weekend was so wonderful (it's my facebook status right now), and when I told her it all sounded very non- spectacular, but sometimes life is about enjoying simple pleasures.
Making sure I got out and enjoyed the sunshine certainly helped, as did the best meal out I've had in long time with a good friend. If you're ever in the area where I love and want a recommendation then send me a message, beautifully cooked mussels with proper chips that had never been frozen! Strictly Come Dancing has started again (that Dancing with the stars if you're American), which always makes me happy. The costumes, the glamour, the drama, the laughter it's perfect saturday night tv.
Sunday I went to church (I know gasp from those who know me!) to present a 20 year service award to one of the Guiders in the district and it was great to be ale to recognize her somewhere that means a lot to her even it doesn't to me. Afterwards I escaped into the Peak District to soak up the sunshine to go climbing. Somehow it's my first day out on grit that I've managed all summer, but it was a great day. I scared myself up 2 severes, the second of which you can see here (if you climb, yes that is a lot of gear, I was having one of those moments!)

I seconded this climb which proceeded to cause me great pain and loss of skin (and to add insult to injury I fell off it!)

And finally here's who I climbed with all day, I will leave you to make your own comments!

On the dizziness front, I felt better as magically and rapidly as I felt ill... who knows what happened, but by Friday I was fighting fit again!

Employment
No not the excellent first album by the Kaiser Chiefs, but jobs, like it or not we all need one unless you are very very lucky. however i would argue that we still all need something to do, everyone needs to feel their day has purpose.
I've just got back from a climbing instruction session and have remembered why I could never do it as a job, if I am truly honest I find it boring, there is absolutely no mental stimulation for me, I'd start going stir crazy. My job as a teacher on the other hand makes me feel alive, I come home tired but happy, knowing that I've worked hard and also that my brain has had to work, pitting yourself against a class of 15 year olds will do that to you!
Some people go to work because they just want to earn a living to support their lifestyle, I work because I can't imagine not working, I need to have my brain put to work each day.
Anyway serious post over, your usual light hearted babbling will resume tomorrow or maybe a bit later!

Holiday pictures
If you don't want to see some pictures of my holiday feel free to move right on, however most of them are now up on friends Facebook pages, so I can now steal them and put them here, 1 set is still m.i.a but I'll forgive him as one holiday is just not good enough for this friend, he had to go and go on holiday immediately after this one!

This is what Pembrokeshire should be like in August, blazing sun, blue skies and sparkling sea.

However it looked like this most of the time, and it's a sign of how much I love you guys that I am willing to post this here, I really am not that chunky in real life, I just had 2 coats on, yes 2 coats, in August.... wtf?
The 2 coats were needed as we had weather that decided to do this...

For some perspective, this is the same harbour wall from last year at what is probably an hour away from high tide, neither me, or my parents have ever seen waves breaking over this wall before. Amazing what a strong wind and a high tide can do!

It led to waves breaking over the cliff tops, which we discovered when we went to look at the top of the crag we had been climbing on and a wave broke over the top of our heads!

We were standing at the obvious top in this picture.
My younger brother got a hard climb done (which I then followed him up), he always sticks his tongue out when he concentrates! Bless!

And to prove I did some climbing here's one of me, not climbing something quite so hard!

And finally a picture of what we did when not climbing, kite flying, or not in my case, it looked like hard work, and I like my feet to remain attached to something solid!

Woah, this is going to be a long post! Thanks Ginger for taking some lovely photos, and thanks guys for an awesome week despite the rain, who knew you could cram so many people in a 2 person camper van to escape the wind and rain!

One week
That's how long I have until I enter the world of work for good. Sounds scary doesn't it! After I've got back from holiday it's all become far more real, as it's the next big thing that's happening. However between then and now I need to sort out all the chaos from being on a wet, windy, sunny amping holiday. All the climbing kit needs washing as it's all got salty and it's not a good idea to leave it that way, all the kitchen stuff needs washing as it's rather dirty, and I need to go shopping as I have no food to eat.
For now I'll leave you with a cimbing photo and get going with the day. Hopefully I'll have a few more photos in a bit, I'm waiting for other people to upload them as I'm ashamed to say that I took practically no photos!

Bounce
The camp I went to was in Northamptonshire and called Bounce, my Mum commented when she saw me today that I seemed really up-beat and happy, and I am, going away for a week, away from the phone and email gave me a chance to escape for a while and not think about anything more than eating, sleeping and teaching climbing.
Anyway I've uploaded my photos, and thought I'd share a few. I took my own knitting to camp, but one of the activities was also chance to teach the Guides to knit with the aim of making a charity blanket. I had to cast on a few squares, and fix a few mistakes but didn't get chance to do alot as it was at the same time I was teaching climbing.
There was also a stained glass window we were painting, which ended up being really beautiful.

Then of course there the outdoor activities, I was running climbing on the oldest mobile climbing tower I think I have ever seen, they also had bungee trampolines, shooting, archery, and a huge bouncy slide. The girls got to do so many more things but I was so busy running the climbing I didn't get chance to see.

I belong....
There was a t-shirt produced by Girlguiding UK, on it it says I belong.... and then lists a load of amazing facts about the organisation, it talks about the brilliant things we do an says something like this...
Almost half of the women in Britain have been involved in guiding at some point in their lives
Around 30 per cent of eight-year-old girls are in Brownies
Seventy per cent of five- to seven-year-olds, 73 per cent of seven- to ten-year-olds, 81 per cent of ten to 15-year-olds and a massive 96 per cent of 16- to 25-year-olds like to spend time together without any boys being there
I've just got back from a week at camp where I have been reminded just how much this movement can do for girls from any walk of life, and how much pleasure I get from working with them. I've come away re-energised about my own unit and have made so many new friends. I arrived at camp a stranger, with in 6 hours I had made so many new friends.
I'm just trying to catch up after a week away, I have taken some photo, I'll put them up tomorrow.

This could be one of those posts....
You know, the ones where I have nothing really say, ramble on a bit, make lots of spelling mistakes, and talk about lots of things where I forget you guys don't know the back story behind it!
Anyway without further ado, I am feeling yucky, not really unwell, just a bit headachey, nauseous, and run down. I've spent most of today and yesterday listening to the cricket (england are playing South Africa), knitting, and sorting out some things for when I start teaching in September. I've also spent far too much time on the internet!
I leave on Sunday to go and do some climbing instruction at a Guide Camp in Northamptonshire, I get back Friday so will be a whole week away from my laptop. I'm hoping to get quite a bit of knitting done while I'm away, everything knitting right now I've been knitting for ages and I just fancy a change. It will also be nice to have nothing to do except a bit or=f work and then my time is my own but in a place where I don't have to worry about cooking or anything like that, like a paid holiday really!
I've still not managed to get out climbing personally this summer which has been a bit annoying, we (my housemates and I) had grand plans for Thursday and then it chucked it down all day. Still I'm sure that the week in Pembrokeshire with friends will make up for it!
Right I think that will do for now, before I write something odd, I'm off to get tea out of the oven and settle down looking forward to the return of The Tudors and hoping that this series features more of the delicious bum of Jonathan Rhys Meyers!

Progress
Ok some time soon I promise to post about something about knitting, but I'm very proud of my progress so far.
I'm 8.5 inches in, and have started the calf shaping. It's going really well, I've even done a stripe of both of the special tour colours.
Here's a quick picture-

It's taken on my web cam so not the greatest quality but you get the idea! most of this progress was amde at my first ever knit night which I've just got back from.
All day today and tomorrow I've been or will be teaching climbing outside, I've been getting up at 7.00 each morning to get over to where we're climbing. Hopefully tonight I won't have the trouble I've been having of just not wanting to sleep! I'm looking forward to my day off on Thursday as I need to get my room organised, while everything is out of boxes some stuff is still in piles, which is making me very messy. If it's not tidy to start off with making myself tidy up what I've just arrived back with is very difficult!

More tour stuff, and a long day
All weekend I've been working. Today has been at a mobile climbing tower at a Outdoor sports festival in Sheffield called Cliffhanger. I've spent all day putting on and taking off climbing harnesses and my fingers hurt!
However despite the aching fingers I have managed to cast on for my Nether Garments tonight (finally!). I've not done as much as I wanted as I've also had to do some computer stuff, but now they're started I've stepped in the right direction!
Here's a quick photo, the colour is very wrong as it was taken in the dark and I can't get the camera flash to come on???

Here's also all the yarn I've been sent to do in between the special colourways I talked about yesterday. A big thank you to Natalie, Sussex Yorkie, Northernlights, and Jammam.

Wiped Out...
What with all this comment leaving, finishing off my PGCE, and packing to move house I'm finding very little time to write on here, when I do find time I'm left with writers block.
After a rubbish start today (I had to have my first day off sick from the course) I perked up a bit, which was lucky as it was the last Rainbow meeting of the year and I was then teaching climbing yet. I think the day off might have done the trick, I now feel like I can make it through the next couple of days, it was starting to get to the point where I could no longer concentrate and was just in a dreadful mood. After a bit of time to regroup 'm ready to battle on, though a session of moving boxes this evening has left me ready for bed!
On that note, I'm off to bed, come back in the next couple of days for a post about sea-kyaking and backpacking in Canada when I was 13.

More answers...
Wow the questions just keep coming.
Here are a few more answers, I promise I'll do a post about something else soon. I've fried my brain in the beautiful sunshine we've had today (well the half pint of cider is also making me sleepy) so I'm not up to much more than this!
How did you hook up with the NaComLeavMo thing?
I found out about it via Eliza at Doolittle and just thought it seemed fun. also with not belonging to any of the blogging communities I've never had many visitors before.
How do Rainbows get on with Brownies?
Just fine actually, I think we run Guiding in the UK a little differently than you do in the US with Girl Scouts. In my Rainbow unit are 15 girls aged between 5 and 7, at the end of every school term I pack a couple who have turned 7 off to Brownies, and at the start of the next term I take a couple of new 5 year olds. Most of the Rainbows can't wait to go to Brownies, like all kids they want to be big and grown up, and to them the Brownies seem so adult!
Climbing always seems very scary and dangerous to me, have you had any scare?
I'll come out and say this right at the start, like a lot of rational people I am scared of heights. I don't like being very high up and looking down! However I do love climbing, but most of the time when I climb I'm concentrating so hard on what I'm doing I don't notice the height. In the style of climbing I do (ie. not mountaineering) I'm more likely to get hurt in a car accident than I am get hurt climbing. We are a really risk averse society but all think nothing of getting in these metal killing machines on a regular basis. Having said that yes I have hurt myself once, this was the result.

That was after two weeks on crutches and regular icing and using a compression bandage, my ankle is still a little bit dodgy now, but I gain so much enjoyment from climbing I'd never not do it.
Have you done something that turned out to be a mistake but that you would do again if given the chance?
I think I can honestly say no. While I have made mistakes I would change most of them, but none of those mistakes have been so disastrous that I have major regrets about them. I hope to continue in this manner!
Ok come back tomorrow for Fix-it-Friday where I will share with you some sort of wondrous tip, or website and point you towards Jo for some more good ideas from her and her readers.
Here are a few more answers, I promise I'll do a post about something else soon. I've fried my brain in the beautiful sunshine we've had today (well the half pint of cider is also making me sleepy) so I'm not up to much more than this!
